Chinese Cooking Class – Authentic Chinese cooking class with Chef Mike.Shanghai World Financial Tower – The second tallest skyscraper adorning the skyline of Shanghai is 492m high and is a key player in the ballet of twinkling lights of the city.If you’re feeling brave, you can arrange to go ‘rooftopping’ which means you go out on the outside of the 3 rd top floor attached by a cable and walk around its peak a la King Kong. Give cloudy days a miss here though as the view is more like the centre of cotton candy. Coffee shop, gift shop, and comfy seats await to help you enjoy the vista. Jin Mao Tower – You can be whisked up to the 88 th floor of this statuesque beauty to enjoy the best views of the city in this art deco style pagoda-esque skyscraper.Or just take a ride to experience the fun of travelling at 431km an hour on the world’s fastest bullet train. Maglev Train – Zoom along at the speed of light, well, almost, in this futuristic very convenient and time saving way to get to the airport in Shanghai. The pretty Jade Buddha Temple was built in 1882 showcases this side of the city, by still be a popular place for locals to worship daily, as well as a draw to tourists who come to admire the two jewel encrusted Buddhas that adorn it. Jade Buddha Temple – As well as the shiny, somewhat consumer led exterior of Shanghai, the city also has a religious heart that beats strongly today. The shopping area near there is great for souvenirs, and has a lot of choices and bargains, and also street food. It is possible to walk here form the ship, but it is about an hour’s walk. There is a bazaar attached which sells many local handcrafts and souvenirs. It costs 35 Yuan to enter (about $5 USD), and in my opinion well worth it. It is filled with flowers, statues, pavilions, trees and even has an art gallery with art by local artists in its centre. Yuyuan Gardens & Bazaar – This beautiful garden is an oasis of peace in the midst of the bustling Shanghai. ![]() There are sections on Ancient Chinese Sculptures, pottery, Buddha sculpture, as well as Royal stamps, calligraphy, jade and ivory works. Shanghai Museum – This huge, beautifully designed imposing building in the centre of the city is a fantastic museum of four floors, which is free to go in and has a lot to see. This is the historical financial centre, and where there is a lot of nightlife open late in the evening when we’re there for an overnight. This is the place to get the best view of the iconic buildings all lit up at night. There are cool clubs, bars, Michelin Star restaurants, as well as high-end fashion stores and businesses along it, with a boardwalk running all the way along the riverside. The Bund – This is the area along the Huangpu River that is the coolest spot in Shanghai.Shanghai has many attractions and also great smaller cities and towns nearby that are worth visiting. The subway is easy to get around on, it only costs about 40 cents a trip, or $4 for a day ticket, which is worth it if you are going to use it a lot in one day. Note: Shanghai feels very different after dark, and many streets that I would be happy to stomp during the day I would rather hop in a taxi to my destination of after the sun goes down. Shanghai is a very pleasant city to walk around, and if you’re willing to put the time in pounding the pavement, you wont need to spend much, if any, on transport, and will get a real feel of the atmosphere of the city while going from place to place. I used the Lonely Planet Map, attached below, to negotiate my way around the city walking, and found it very useful and definitely adequate for all my needs. Taking a tour from the ship, or an independent one yourself that picks you up at the ship makes it even easier, all depending on what you want from the experience. Signs for the stations are in Mandarin script and also in roman characters, and the subway is very cheap. It is quite easy to navigate once you know which station you need. You can also from here take the underground if you’re up for that. ![]() There are quite a few major sights within walking distance from here if you like to find your own fun. If you have more than a 20-minute wait, you can walk it, it is a safe easy walk. The shuttles usually run every 30 minutes, so since the walk is only 20 minutes maximum, my advice would be to check when the next shuttle leaves to see if its worth waiting for. The ship should have a free shuttle bus service which takes you the 5-10 minute drive (15-20 minute walk) from the cruise ship terminal to the start of the main part of the Bund. The ship happily docks in the finest spot in Shanghai possible, along the Huangpu River very near the elegant, fancy Bund.
